Once installed, Little Snitch pops up a dialog-box which allows users to permit or deny the connection. Little Snitch also has options to define certain rules for regulating similar future connection attempts. The software runs in the background and is also capable of detecting various virus, Trojan and other malware activities.

It provides flexible configuration options which allow users to grant permissions to the trusted programs so that you do not have to give permissions every time that program connects to the internet. The utility also includes a network monitor which shows you detailed information about your incoming and outgoing network traffic. When you install Little Snitch, it shows up a status icon in the menu bar which gives you a summary of your current network activity along with a monitor window where you get alerts in case of new traffic events. You must note that Little Snitch is not capable of cutting off incoming connections. Incoming connections can be blocked by the built-in-firewall of Mac OS X.

How to Disable/Stop Little Snitch

In order to turn off Little Snitch temporarily follow these instructions:

Open Little Snitch Configuration app from the applications folder.

KisMAC is an open source wireless network discovery application designed for Mac OS X consisting of a wide variety of features. Unlike other similar programs, KisMAC is essentially made for network security professionals. This might make the application somewhat difficult to grasp for beginners. It is a free software which is distributed under GNU General Public License.

The KisMAC application actively scans for networks on cards supported by Mac OS X. It also scans passively for networks on other supported cards. The program has an advantage over certain other programs like MacStumbler / NetStumbler / iStumbler as it can use passive scanning and monitor mode.

KisMAC to Crack WPA/WEP with Wordlists

KisMAC can perform various functions like using brute force to crack WPA and WEP keys as well as working with a monitor mode enabled card to exploit various flaws such as badly generated keys and weak scheduling. A supportable card like Prism2 or Ralink can be used for packet reinjection. By attaching a GPS receiver with NMEA compatibility, one can also perform the function of GPS mapping.

KisMAC requires a wordlist that is written in plain text format and includes the various words and phrases that the application can try out. You can download the wordlist from the official site.

It is also possible to save important data in PCAP format and load them into packet analyzing programs such as the Wireshark.

KisMAC Features

The KisMAC application has the following key features:

Reveals cloaked / hidden / closed SSIDs

PCAP import and export

Shows the logged in clients (with MAC Addresses, signal strengths and IP addresses)

Support for 802.11b/g

GPS support and Mapping

Capable of drawing area maps of network coverage

AppleScript-able

De-authentication attacks

Different attacks against encrypted networks

Kismet drone support (capture from a Kismet drone)

The latest version of KisMAC, version 0.3.3 released on February 7th, 2011 fixed several bugs and crashes. However, it still does not support joining WPA2 and WPA networks.

Hardware chipsets supported by KisMAC

KisMAC can support many third party PCMCIA cards. Other chipsets are now also in progress for complete support. The internal AirPort hardware is completely supported for scanning.

The various hardware chipsets supported by KisMAC are:

Apple AirPort and AirPort Extreme (these are dependent upon Apple’s drivers)

Realtek RTL8187L USB (such as the Alfa AWUS036H)

Intersil Prism 2, 2.5, 3 in PCMCIA and USB devices

Intersil PrismGT

Atheros PCMCIA

Lucent Hermes I & II (Orinoco 2 and 11 Mbit)

Cisco Aironet (with older 4.xx firmware)

Ralink rt2570 and rt73 USB devices

KisMAC Crypto support

KisMAC offers the following crypto support:

Brute force attacks against WPA, WEP and LEAP

Newsham 21-bit attack against WEP

Weak scheduling attack against WEP

KisMAC Tutorial

Here is a brief guide on how to use the KisMAC application:

Installing KisMAC

Download and install KisMAC from the official site.

Plug in your Injection device. Remember not to install the drivers of the card or USB adapter.

Now start KisMAC application.

Selecting KisMAC Injection Device

On the Tab KisMAC > Preferences > Drivers, Select your Injection device i.e.: “USB RT73 device”. In case you have doubts as to what you should choose, check the “approved” hardware list.

Check box “Use as primary device”

Select only 1-13 if you are in Europe, 1-11 if you are in USA, 1-14 if you are in Japan. On certain cases, ch 12-14 are prone to pick up interferences from some other home devices. Hence it is safe to stay within 1-11

Check the box “keep everything”

Close the Dialog Box

Select “Start Scan” on the main screen. KisMAC will now scan for all accessible networks.

Look for a particular network having a WEP key (column “ENC”) and a healthy signal as well as traffic

Scanning For Available Networks

OR

Enter “WEP” on the search box and select “encryption” to filter the results

If the Column ENC is “NO”, then it means the network is OPEN and hence there is no need to crack it.

Once you have chosen a network, look for the CHANNEL associated with the network, for example, 1, 2 etc.

Go back to Preferences > Drivers, and select the chosen network, for example 1.

Let KisMac operate for 5 minutes and collect data.

Select “Reinject Packets” on the “NETWORK” Tab. After this KisMAC will try to reinject packets that will speed up the process.

Keep an account of the “Unique IV’s” number. Once the number has reached at least 130,000 (the recommended number is 200,000), you may start to consider cracking it.

Reinjecting Packets

Let KisMac operate for 5 minutes and collect data.

Select “Reinject Packets” on the “NETWORK” Tab. After this KisMAC will try to reinject packets that will speed up the process.

Keep an account of the “Unique IV’s” number. Once the number has reached at least 130,000 (the recommended number is 200,000), you may start to consider cracking it.

How to Crack

As soon as you have collected enough, on the NETWORK Tab, select “Crack” > “Weak Scheduling Attack” > “Against Both”. KisMAC will now try to crack the key.

An important thing to remember is that the higher is the “Unique IV’s” number, the greater are the chances to crack the key. Having a higher “Unique IV’s” number also makes the process much faster.

Is your MacBook Pro getting too hot? Are you feeling the burning sensation in your thighs from your MacBook Pro after using CPU intensive apps? If yes, then you might want to check out smcFanControl. This free GPL licensed utility controls fan speed of every Intel Mac computers so that the machine remains cool. It allows users to set minimum speed of the in-built fans in the system to maintain its temperature. However in order to ensure that your machine is not spoiled, smcFanControl does not allow you set minimum speeds below the limit set by Apple.

smcFanControl Snow Leopard Features

This utility boasts of a number of features:

It allows you to monitor current temperature (either in Celsius or Fahrenheit) and allows you to assign several minimum speeds for each fan using a slider user interface.

It also allows you to apply different settings, as you change your power source.

With the smcFanControl 2.2.2, support every Mac OS release has been added.

Fans get displayed in the menubar.

Fans of Macpro and iMac are read in the initial startup of the system.

All you need to do is to use this utility with caution and ensure that you never set the speed below the limits prescribed by Apple. This utility software always keeps the fans in automatic mode.

smcFanControl For Mac OS X Lion

The new version of smcFanControl (2.3) supports Mac OS X Lion and it also fixes a crash which occured on startups of some macs.

smcFanControl iMac Requirements

Sometimes you may find that smcFanControl is not working. This might be because of the fact that you do not have the system requirements to run smcFanControl. Here are the requisites to run this application:

Intel Mac

Mac OS X 10.4 or higher version

smcFanControl For Windows

As of now you cannot set minimum fan speed when you are operating under Windows OS, as smcFanControl is a native OS X app. But if you got both Mac OS and Windows OS installed on your system and set a minimum fan speed in OS X using the application and then restart into Windows, the settings are not lost and the new minimum fan speed is used on Windows for that particular session.

Uninstall smcFanControl

In order to uninstall smcFanControl, all you need to do is to drag it into trash. It is to be noted that changes you have made using smcFanControl gets lost once you shutdown you machine. The minimum speed of fan goes back to the default value of the system.

smcFanControl Leopard Download

Download smcFanControl

smcFanControl is a very suitable program for cooling down your laptop if it is getting overheated regularly. But as said, one has to use this program judiciously and with extreme caution and precautions to get the most out of it.

What is CryptNetUrlCache?

It is a part of the CryptoAPI certificate validation check done in Windows Operating Systems. It lists all the blocked servers which do not work with ethics of the Windows Integrated Authentication. There are two folders “Metadata” and “Content” which logs the websites that has been checked once for such authentication. Hence, next time IE tries to connect to such sites it will not check for validation criteria, thereby increasing the load time of the page.

CryptNetUrlCache Folder Names

There are two main sub folders inside the CryptNetUrlCache. They are responsible for keeping a note of all the data associated with the validation procedure.

Content

It stores all the content path and url of the wesbites that has been validated by Windows CryptoAPI

Metadata

It stores all other inforamtion related to the validated websites.

Note: There are some subfolder as well which are generated with different names depending on the runtime deployment.

CryptNetUrlCache Delete

It is strongly advisable not to delete CryptNetUrlCache folder or any of its content as this will slow up your browsing experience. Deleting cache will only help you get rid of the stored data which will auto generate again while accessing such sites.

CryptNetUrlCache Contents

While trying to edit the contents inside the CryptNetUrlCache folder with an hex edtior we found that it contains log of websites and their sub domains. The verified and the authenticated websites are hence not checked while trying to reconnect with the server everytime a request is generated.

CryptNetUrlCache Microsoft Explanation

Microsoft has provided a complete documentation about the working principle of this program.

CryptNetUrlCache and Roaming profiles

It has been found that whenever any temporary data is erased related to cryptnet url cache, there arises a problem with romaing profiles (if any) used in the operating system. Actually this is not due to the temporary purge of data but because of some third party applications which conflicts with the roaming profiles and the cryptnet urlacache as well. Removing such third party programs can help you get rid of the errors associated with the roaming profiles.

If you are having some other problems with this folder you can post it up in our comment section. We will be more than happy to help you out.

What is Cisco NAC Agent?

Cisco NAC agent (commonly known as Clean Access Agent), is a client side authentication technique implemented by Cisco systems which can also check for required program updates and patch files if necessary.

It is very surprising to see that this process can be hacked easily but is still being implemented in many large institutions for authentication and validation. The worse part is that, it can handle Windows OS effectively but lacks the ability to validate Mac OS or LINUX systems. Though it provides a web based authentication procedure for these OS, it can easily be over ridden to bypass major authentication protocols.

How to Download and Use Cisco NAC Agent

Network Authentication can only be done for Windows Operating Systems.

First, you need to Download Cisco NAC Agent from the Cisco download point and install it.

After installation while connecting to the network you need to right click the program “icon” in the task bar and select the “Popup Login Window”. This will help you to overcome some situations where NAC Agent is not popping up automatically.

As soon as the system starts connecting to the network server, you need to provide the “username”, “password” and select the allocated authority from the drop down box below it.

Then press “Login” button to connect.

Not all Windows Operating Systems are supported. NAC agent supports Windows 98, 2000, ME, XP, Vista, 7 and Windows XP Media Center Edition. Only One Mac version supported by Clean Access Agent, which is Mac OS X.

Cisco NAC Agent Problems

NAC Agent is one of the few Cisco programs which are full of glitches and errors. Still the reliability of this program to authenticate students and users in university campus and also in some of corporate sectors is quite interesting. The most common errors associated with this program is the client end error. Sometimes it simply wont connect. The basic reason being unable to access all resources or authenticate the MAC or IP address of the system. A simple advice would be to restart your system and try reconnecting again.

Another notable failure is the inability to identify machines with respect to the MAC address resolution. If you have changed your MAC address and the new address is not standard mark up of registered companies, you wont be allowed to log in. The best thing would be to reset your MAC address to compromise with this error. Now the worst part is that if you have an operating system other than the ones mentioned above you will have to pass through web authentication which is done via cisco nac web agent.

Cisco NAC Web Agent

The Cisco Web Agent runs on the same concept but implements its with the help of a web page. The authentication is down by the web program with the help of a temporary executable file.

It is not much persistent as Cisco NAC agent, and can process only singular user session. It does not require the Cisco NAC agent to be pre-installed so as be used. Hence this saves the time to download and install the NAC agent and can authenticate the system with the help of a browser opening the log-in page. The web-page automatically downloads the temporary installer and loads it in the memory. This program scans for proper credentials of the system and logs back the data to the sever from the browser. As soon as the session is disconnected, The operating System erases this executable file from the memory as well.

Download Cisco NAC WebAgent

You cannot download the web agent separately. This has been done to ensure that the user is not able to manipulate or hack the log file to bypass the authentication procedure.

Apple is famous for its hassle free code execution which has been the very basic code of conduct laid by the legend, Steve Jobs. Hence there are less bugs and vulnerabilities in the system. Still there are some common base line unknown errors which have not been rectified in the later versions.

One of such errors is the 3194 restore error. It has been there since iPhone 3gs and now it still bugs up the latest iPhone version 4. In this article we will see how we can fix 3194 error.

Restore iPhone to stock iOS Downgrade version to v3.1.3

You can fix this with the help of a very effective program known as Tiny Umbrella. This came as a relief to almost all downgrading users when there was no other options available to them. Though there are some other programs we shall not be discussing them as this fix our problems for sure.

How to Fix Error 3194 iTune Error With Tiny Umbrella

Download Tiny Umbrella from the official website here.

Start “Tiny Umbrella”
